“All Good Things Must Come to an End”
or do they?
It was established in her honour as a gesture of appreciation and recognition of her years of dedication to education and continued learning. M St. Margaret had a long history with Loretto being a teacher and Mistress of Boarders and Principal of Loretto Abbey.
The Brennan women, all Loretto Abbey graduates, organized the fund with support from numerous families of Loretto and Alumnae. They donated enough monies to create a Registered Scholarship Trust Fund. It has historically dispensed $500 to both Loretto Abbey and Loretto College graduates. It has been a part of the Alumnae Association’s collection of Awards for over 40 years.
This fund has been administered by a Chief Trustee and Financial agent within the Executive Committee for the Alumnae Association.
The account has now run below its required amount. Without an infusion of funds, the Trust Fund will have to be closed forever.
It is bitter sweet to be at the end of such an important and honorable endeavor started so many years ago to honor an icon of incredible educational values.
The Loretto Alumnae Association would like to thank the Brennan Family and all the families that created this special Award. It does not go unnoticed of how much it helped so many graduates / women to continue their education and thus fulfilling their dreams.
Can you please advise how much is granted on an annual basis, as well as how much you are wanting to raise?
Kind thanks
Hi Barb,
Each year, two graduates are awarded The Mother St. Margaret Kelly Educational Award, a $500 scholarship. The recipients of this prestigious award, one being from Loretto Abbey and one from Loretto College schools, are graduates that are recognized for their outstanding achievement and have chosen to further their studies at a higher education institution.
We’d like to raise enough money every year to keep the award going.

Hi – This is the second or third year J have seen this appeal, and I am trying to get an accurate picture of what has happened and what is planned
Has the capital provided in the original trust fund been drawn down? If the intent is to disperse $1000 each year, is the intent of the LAA to fundraise $1000 each year?
Could you clarify please?
So you’d like to start a fundraising campaign? How much is needed to “keep the fund alive”?
There must be a lot of Loretto graduates around that might wish to contribute if the word got out.

A couple of ladies have inquired as to the amount of money required to ensure the survival of the fund but I don’t see a response. Can you please let us know the number? It’s oftentimes easier to raise money when donors can see progress toward a goal. Thank you!
Hi Maureen,
Each year, two graduates are awarded The Mother St. Margaret Kelly Educational Award, a $500 scholarship. That means that every year we require at least $1,000 to keep the fund alive.

I still remember Mother St. Margaret as my teacher (soooo many years ago!) she literally changed the course of my life. I certainly will be making a contribution in her honour. But… I suggest that it might be helpful to explain more about the plan, if the goal is to create a permanent fund:
How much is needed to be raised in total?
Could the criteria for the award be specifically focused in a way that reflects Mother St. Margaret specifically?…
Those kind of details may be meaningful to potential donors. Thank you so very much for bringing this forward 🙂
Dear Leslie,
Thank you for the beautiful message (from October 22) about the beloved Mother St. Margaret Kelly who, from your response, was truly an extraordinary teacher and person.
To better explain the Fund in her name, it has already been in existence and a permanent award of The Loretto Alumnae Association.
My name is Paola D’Alessandro and I am Chief Trustee for the Mthr St. Margaret Kelly Fund. The Executive Alumnae Commitee, has administrated this award since 1974. The criteria was written by the families that started and donated to the originally fund. (this can be seen on our Awards page. Every year, the award goes to two Loretto graduates from both Abbey and College school who are continuing their education. It is a $500 cheque to each recipient. The fund has dipped well below three hundred dollars therefore we are asking for any amount to help meet the $1,000. yearly amount requirement needed to keep it running.
It is bittersweet knowing this is the end of this important scholarship. If we are able to keep it going even for another year or so, it would be of great help to much deserved Graduates!

Thanks again from all of us at The Loretto Alumnae Association!
Hi — I would like to echo some of the comments above — what is the intent here? Is it to raise $1000 for two scholarships or is it to create a trust fund that would generate that much? And, if the latter, how much is needed to make that happen?
Hello Mary,
Many thanks to you as well for your interest and comments on behalf of The Mother St. Margaret Kelly Scholarship. The intent is to solely raise monies to sustain this Trust account and award recipients every year.

Now that the fund is with a balance of only three hundred dollars, we are asking for any amount to help meet the $1,000. yearly amount requirement needed to keep it running.
Especially during this challenging year, it would be vital to keep it going even for another year or so, a great help to much deserving Graduates!

Thank you again for all of us at The Loretto Alumnae Association
Just adding my thoughts to Mary Donaghy’s. Can you please let us know if you’re looking to build the fund or strictly for 2x $500 donations ongoing. Thank you!
